Why Is My Video Not Auto-Playing on Mobile?

Common reasons why autoplay may not work on mobile devices and how to fix each one.

Mobile browsers and operating systems have strict rules around video autoplay to protect battery life and data usage. If your video is not auto-playing on mobile, work through the checks below to identify and resolve the issue.

Step 1 — Check Your Video Settings

First, confirm that mobile autoplay is enabled in your Vid Settings page. If the setting is already on and the video is still not auto-playing, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

Step 2 — Common Causes and Fixes

iOS Power Saving Mode is enabled

When Power Saving Mode is active on an iPhone or iPad, iOS automatically blocks all video autoplay to conserve battery. This overrides your Vidalytics settings entirely.

Fix: Go to Settings → Battery on the device, disable Power Saving Mode, and test the video again.

Android Data Saver Mode is enabled

Data Saver Mode on Android blocks autoplay to reduce mobile data usage — even if autoplay is enabled in your video settings.

Fix: Go to Settings → Network (or similar, depending on the device), disable Data Saver Mode, and test again.

Animated GIF thumbnail combined with power saving or data saver mode

If your video uses an animated GIF as its thumbnail and the viewer has Power Saving or Data Saver mode enabled, the video may not auto-play and could appear as a blank black or white box instead.

Fix: Enable the Big Play Button on your video. This ensures viewers always see a clear prompt to start playback, even when autoplay is blocked by the device.

Step 3 — Additional Considerations

Older iOS versions (iOS 9 and earlier)

iOS 9 does not support video autoplay regardless of the video provider or settings. This is an Apple system limitation that cannot be overridden. Viewers on iOS 9 will need to tap to play.

Data Saver Mode with Disable Pausing enabled

If a viewer has Data Saver Mode active and your video has Disable Pausing turned on, the video may not play at all. Use Disable Pausing only when necessary, as it can also negatively impact conversions in some cases.

Mobile fullscreen and the seeking bar

When a video goes fullscreen on a mobile device, the operating system automatically adds its own seeking bar — this is default system behavior across all video players, not just Vidalytics. If preventing viewers from seeking is important for your use case, consider disabling fullscreen mode for mobile viewers in your video settings.
