What Are Tags and How Do They Work?
How to tag your viewers in your CRM based on what they watch — and use that data to personalize your follow-up automatically.
Tags let you trigger actions in your CRM or email platform the moment a viewer meets a specific condition while watching your video. Instead of sending the same follow-up to everyone, you can personalize your marketing based on exactly what each viewer watched — or did not watch.
A few examples of what this makes possible:
- A viewer did not reach the pricing section of your VSL → automatically email them the pricing info
- A viewer watched through the offer but did not buy → automatically send them a discount coupon
- A viewer clicked your CTA button → add them to your "hot lead" sequence immediately
Tags connect your video performance data to your marketing automation — making every follow-up more relevant and more effective.
Availability & Restrictions
- Tagging is not available on the Free plan — upgrade to any paid plan to gain access
- Tags require a unique viewer identifier (such as an email address) to be passed through the URL for them to fire correctly
- Tags will not trigger while the video is playing under a Smart Autoplay overlay
- A tag will not fire again if it has already been triggered previously for that viewer in the same session.
Tag Types
When creating a tag, you choose the condition that triggers it:
- Timed — fires when a viewer watches up to a specific point in your video. Use this to segment viewers based on how far they got
- Call to Action — fires when a viewer clicks your Vidalytics CTA button. Use this to identify your most engaged viewers
- Interactive — fires based on the choices a viewer makes in an Interactive Smart Vid. Use this to capture the specific path each viewer took through your funnel
How to Create a Tag
Open your Video Settings — go to your video library, select the video you want to tag, and click Edit to open its settings.
Go to Marketing Settings — click the Marketing tab at the top of the settings page.
Create a new tag — open the Tags section and click + Create New Tag.
Configure your tag — set up the following for your tag:
- Tag Name — give it a descriptive name that reflects the condition being tracked
- Tag Type — choose Timed, Call to Action, or Interactive
- Time — if using a Timed tag, set the timestamp at which it should fire
- Field — add the field name Vidalytics should use to identify the viewer and pass the data through
Important: The Field is critical to get right. It must match exactly the field name being passed through your URL — including capitalization. The most common field is email. If you are passing the viewer's email through the URL, enter email as the field name. An incorrect field name means the tag will not be assigned to the correct contact.
Save and Publish — click Save and then Publish your video for the tag to go live.
Next Steps — Connecting Your Tags to Your CRM
Once your tags are set up, you need to connect Vidalytics to your CRM or email platform to send the data through. Choose the method that fits your setup:
- Zapier integration — the most common method. See how to set up the Zapier integration here
- URL parameters — if your landing page builder can pass opt-in form data through the URL. Learn how to tag through URL parameters here
- ClickFunnels — see the ClickFunnels-specific tagging guide here
- Advanced method — if none of the above apply to your setup. See the advanced tagging guide here — please read the disclaimer at the top before proceeding

Troubleshooting — How to Verify Your Tags Are Working
To confirm a tag is firing correctly, check your browser's localStorage for a vidalytics_trigger entry. If the tag has fired, it will appear there with the tag's GUID recorded.
A few things to keep in mind if your tags are not firing as expected:
- Tags will not trigger while the video is playing under a Smart Autoplay overlay — the viewer must have actively engaged with the video
- A tag will not fire a second time if the
vidalytics_triggerkey in localStorage already contains that tag's GUID — meaning it was already triggered in a previous session for that viewer
