Setting Up Your Video Thumbnail

How to add and configure a thumbnail or splash screen for your video.

Your video thumbnail — also known as the splash screen — is the first thing viewers see before they press play. Vidalytics gives you two thumbnail types to choose from, each with two setup options, so you can pick whatever works best for your video and your audience.

Thumbnail Types

Image Thumbnail

An image thumbnail displays a static image before your video plays. You have two ways to set this up:

  • Upload an image — choose any image from your computer to use as your thumbnail. The image will be automatically stretched to fill the full video size, so keep your aspect ratio in mind when selecting it
  • Select a frame from your video — browse through your video and pick a specific frame to use as the thumbnail image

Video Thumbnail

A video thumbnail plays a short video clip in place of a static image before the viewer presses play — great for grabbing attention. You have two ways to set this up:

  • Upload a short video — upload a separate video clip to use as your thumbnail
  • Select a clip from your video — choose a specific section of your existing video to loop as the thumbnail.

How to Set It Up 

  1. Go to Video Settings and expand the Thumbnails section
  2. Choose your thumbnail type — Image or Video
  3. Select your preferred setup option and follow the prompts to upload or select your content
  4. Click Save, then hit Publish at the top right of the page for your changes to go live

Note: If you are unable to upload your thumbnail, check the file name for special characters such as parentheses ( ) and remove them before trying again.

Tip: You can set a different thumbnail specifically for mobile. If you do not set one, your desktop thumbnail will be used by default on mobile as well.

Exit Thumbnails

Vidalytics also supports Exit Thumbnails — a separate thumbnail that appears when a viewer pauses your video at a specific moment. You can learn more about how to set those up HERE.
