How to Save Bandwidth in Vidalytics

Practical tips to reduce your bandwidth consumption without sacrificing viewer experience.

Bandwidth usage naturally increases with traffic volume — the more people watching your videos, the more bandwidth you consume. The good news is there are several effective ways to reduce your consumption without compromising the quality of your content.

Note: Vidalytics uses Adaptive Bitrate Streaming and Per Title AI encoding, which already saves significantly more bandwidth compared to most other video hosting providers — and our bandwidth rates are among the most competitive available. The tips below will help you optimize further on top of that foundation.

Upload at the Right Specs

One of the most impactful things you can do is upload your video at optimized settings from the start. Here are the recommended specs for efficient bandwidth usage:

  • Resolution: 720p (1280x720) — avoid 1080p or 4K unless absolutely necessary
  • Frame Rate: 24fps or 30fps
  • Format: MP4 with H.264 codec
  • Bitrate: 1,000 to 2,500 kbps video / 128 kbps AAC audio
  • File Size: Under 500MB for shorter VSLs

Note: Compressing your video with tools like Handbrake before uploading will not reduce bandwidth consumption — Vidalytics transcodes all videos into multiple quality versions regardless. Compression mainly helps with faster upload times, not ongoing bandwidth usage.

Be Strategic About Smart Autoplay

Smart Autoplay is one of Vidalytics' most powerful features for conversions — but it does consume bandwidth even when viewers do not click play, because the player begins loading as soon as someone lands on the page.

Before enabling it, consider whether your use case actually requires it:

  • VSLs and sales pages — Smart Autoplay is highly recommended and worth the bandwidth cost
  • Course videos or multiple testimonial videos on one page — autoplay may not be necessary and turning it off can meaningfully reduce consumption

Reduce Your Video Resolution

Lowering your video's resolution is one of the most direct ways to reduce bandwidth. For most use cases — especially videos that are primarily talking head or text on screen — 720p is more than sufficient and will look great for your viewers.

Make Your Video Shorter

Removing unnecessary sections from your video reduces both file size and the amount of bandwidth consumed per view. If you are trying to meaningfully reduce consumption, trimming your video to only what is essential is one of the most effective approaches.

Use an Animated GIF Thumbnail Instead of Autoplay

If you want the visual effect of a playing video without the bandwidth cost of autoplay, consider using an animated GIF as your thumbnail. It creates the impression that the video is already playing — grabbing attention and encouraging clicks — while using significantly less bandwidth than a fully autoplaying video.

Tip: Make sure to compress your thumbnail images before uploading them — both standard and animated GIF thumbnails consume bandwidth too. For recommended thumbnail sizes and specs, see our Optimum Thumbnail Sizes guide.
