Display Settings - Aspect Ratio

Perfect Video on Every Platform

Written by Aldo PeΓ±a

Getting your video to look great on every device no longer requires a developer or custom code. With Display Settings, you can choose the perfect aspect ratio, toggle between fit and fill modes, customize your player background, and preview everything in real time β€” all from within Vidalytics.

πŸ”’ Availability & Restrictions

  • Display Settings are available on all plans.

  • Settings affect the video player and container only β€” your original video file is never modified.

  • Display settings are configured and saved per device (desktop, tablet, and mobile independently.

Note that the placeholder in your embed code uses Vidalytics' default ratio regardless of your chosen display settings

Accessing Display Settings

  1. Go to your Vid Settings page

  2. See the Display Settings section on the top.

πŸ“± Choosing Your Device

Display Settings uses a Platform Picker that lets you configure and preview settings independently for each device type:

  • Desktop

  • Tablet

  • Mobile

Simply select the device you want to configure β€” the preview area updates instantly to reflect that device's view. Repeat the process for each platform to ensure your video looks great everywhere.

Setting Your Aspect Ratio

Once you've selected a device, choose the aspect ratio that best fits your use case. Available options include:

  • 16:9 β€” standard widescreen, ideal for most desktop and landscape video

  • 9:16 β€” vertical format, perfect for mobile-first content

  • 1:1 β€” square format, great for social-style embeds

  • 4:5 β€” portrait format, popular for mobile feeds

  • Original / Custom β€” preserves your video's native ratio or lets you define your own

The preview updates in real time as you switch between options, so you always know exactly what your viewers will see.

Fit vs. Fill 🧩

Once your aspect ratio is set, you can control how the video fills the player container:

  • Fit β€” the video scales to fit within the player, preserving the full frame. This may result in letterboxing (horizontal bars) or pillarboxing (vertical bars) depending on the ratio

  • Fill β€” the video expands to fill the entire player edge to edge, eliminating black bars. Some cropping of the edges may occur

πŸ’‘ Tip: Fill mode works great for mobile displays where you want a clean, full-screen feel without any bars or padding.

πŸŸͺ Background Color & Border

You can customize the background color that appears behind your video within the player container, as well as adjust border transparency to match your brand.

This is especially useful when using Fit mode, where background areas may be visible around the video.

Saving Your Settings

Once you are happy with the configuration for a device:

  1. Click Publish.

  2. Repeat the process for any other devices you want to configure.

  3. Re-publish your video for the changes to go live for your viewers.

⚠️ Important: Always re-publish your video after making Display Settings changes so they are reflected on your live embedded player.
